CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF
“POWER IN THE HANDS OF A FEW”
The S281, Supercharged S281 and the S281-E
Are Revved Up and Refined for 2004
|
2004 is Saleen’s 20th anniversary year and to celebrate this momentous occasion, Saleen, Inc. has created the absolutely best—in power, beauty, performance and refinement—range of Saleen S281 models that only two decades of design, engineering and continuous improvement can produce. S281 The S281 combines classic Saleen performance and appearance with outstanding value. Powered by a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter (281 cid) SOHC V8, the S281 crank out a healthy 290 bhp at 5,100 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm. Saleen features that help the 4-6-liter achieve these levels of performance include power pulleys and custom designed S belt, “PowerFlash” performance computer, Saleen air filter, Saleen exhaust system and a 3.27:1 differential gear ratio. A new feature for 2004 is the S281 Extreme rear wing, which was part of the Mustangs featured in Hollywood Homicide and 2Fast 2Furious. Available features include: a Saleen 13-inch brake system, Saleen performance cooling package, tire and wheel upgrades, Saleen MaxGrip differential and Saleen performance center exhaust. Quarter-mile performance for the 2004 S281 is 14.0 sec at 99 miles an hour; 0-60 mph time is around 5.1 sec. Carrying a Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $36,629 US for the Coupe and $40,688 US for the Convertible, the S281 provides a level of power and sophistication equal to or better than cars costing twice as much. S281 Supercharged Option The supercharged version of the S281 was introduced in 1999 and quickly became known as “The Bad Boy on the Block.” It’s level of performance delighted Saleen customers and dismayed the competition, who mostly came to recognize this Saleen model only from the rear . . . and disappearing into the distance. The supercharged S281 quickly reached a sales level equal to its normally aspirated S281 counterpart. Last year the 281 Supercharged received several significant changes, including a Series IV twin-screw intercooled supercharger that boosted performance up to a neck-snapping 375 bhp at 5,800 rpm and 415 lb-ft of torque at 3,500. That level of performance provides the supercharged S281 driver a 0-60 time of 4.7 sec, with the quarter mile flashing by at 13 sec flat at about 108 mph. This model also features a Saleen twin gauge pod with readouts for boost and air temperature. New features for 2004 include a Saleen performance center exhaust system, an even more stylish rear fascia and a Saleen S281 Extreme rear wing. All three items are identical to the ones on the Hollywood Homicide and 2Fast 2Furious movie cars. Options are similar to those offered on the S281. Despite the industry-leading performance, the supercharged S281 provides consumers a high level of value at a price of 62 851 $ for the Coupe and 66 662 $ for the Convertible. |
